As you probably saw in the object-oriented tutorial movie (go to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/ en-us/beginner/bb308750.aspx and look at Lesson 6), this means the current instance of an object. In this case, this is an instance of the AboutBox class. this is used to access all the public fields, properties, and methods defined in the class. In this example, this is allowing you to assign some content to fields that belong to the AboutBox class, which are also the fields from the AboutBox form. Remember that everything in .NET is an object fields in a form are members of a class, and a form instance is an object.

Decrypting a file for a data recovery agent (DRA) is identical to the process described earlier for a user except that the copy of the FEK encrypted by using the DRA s public key is taken from the file s DRF, decrypted, and used to decrypt the file. Figure 18-8 illustrates the process of obtaining the DRA s private key from his or her user profile, using it to decrypt the FEK, and using the FEK to decrypt the data.

In a stand-alone environment, an administrator for the computer needs to generate a recovery agent certificate and designate a DRA.

For stand-alone computers, Windows XP Professional does not create a default recovery agent. A DRA can be added by using Group Policy on the local computer, but the intended DRA must first have a recovery certificate. Because the computer is stand-alone, EFS creates a self-signed certificate for the DRA. This requires the cipher.exe command-line utility.

Examining Log Files The W3C Extended Log File Format is extremely common. It is used by IIS to log accesses made to its FTP, HTTP, and SMTP servers, as well as by ICF to log inbound network accesses. Understanding this log file format is key for debugging problems with applications and for detecting both attempted and successful network attacks. Figure 20-1 shows an IIS log file opened with Notepad that shows HTTP accesses to an IIS server that has been configured with the extended logging properties previously recommended. On smaller screens, the individual rows of the log file might wrap. The log file begins with comments showing the name and version of the application that created the log as well as the date and time it was created. Each row of the example log file corresponds with one HTTP request made to the server. Empty fields are indicated with a hyphen.
