While most of the files uploaded in Figure 1-26 came from Word 2010, I also uploaded a Word 2003 file named Portal_Preparation found in the middle of the list in Figure 1-27. If you do this, how can you tell a Word 2003 document from a Word 2007 document The icons to the left of the file name do have a small difference (look at the upper left side of the icon), but an easier way exists. When you position your mouse over the document icon, a tooltip style box appears below the cursor with the full file name, and the file name also displays in the Status Bar at the bottom of the screen. Either way, the file name s extension suggests the version of Word used to save that document. You can change the sort order of your document list by clicking the column header by which you want to sort. The first time you click the column header, SharePoint sorts that column in ascending order, and it displays a small up arrow to the right of the column name. The second time you click the column header, SharePoint sorts that column in descending order and adds a small down arrow to the right of the column name. You can also sort a column by placing your mouse over a column header to highlight it. On the right side of the column header, a drop-down arrow appears. Click this arrow to open a menu that allows you to sort the column. In addition to sorting, the drop-down list also allows you to filter the list based on values in the selected column. Figure 1-28 shows that you can filter document types.

The second way to transfer slides into your library begins from PowerPoint 2007 and publishes the slides to SharePoint. To do this, open your PowerPoint presentation and then from the Office Button, click Publish. The Publish submenu provides several ways for you to publish your presentation to other people. In the last chapter, you saw how easily you can build InfoPath forms. When building those forms, the chapter focused primarily on using forms created and saved in a single location, even if that location was on your local computer or in a regular SharePoint document library. However, up until this point, unless you had a copy of InfoPath 2010 installed on your machine, you could not open and use that form. Furthermore, you really don t want to send a copy of the form to everyone who needs it because, for example, making updates to the form would become difficult if everyone at your company had their own copy of the form. Rather, you should publish the form to a common location such as a network file share so that other people in your organization can access it. However, even if these users have access to the network file share, perhaps not everyone that needs to enter data into that form has a copy of InfoPath installed on their computers. To be truly available to everyone, you need to create forms that do not require the users to have InfoPath on their machines. SharePoint together with Forms Services provides such a solution. You can store InfoPath forms in SharePoint libraries and then open them via InfoPath Forms Services. However, there is a cost to provide this ability to display forms using your web browser: you must limit your design options slightly by avoiding the use of some of InfoPath s features that Forms Services and browsers in general do not support. In this chapter, we will look further at publishing forms, both to network file shares and form libraries, using SharePoint to allow more users to access them.
