Figure 10-6. Save a data file from a form to the shared network drive. One other concern about saving your form data this way is that the user is responsible for defining the file name. In this example, I created a file name that combined the user s name, the start date of the absence request, and the number of hours requested. It would be great if everyone used this format every time they saved their data so that you can easily sort the file names to see when people were out of the office and for how long. However, that expectation is not realistic. We will return to this question in a moment, but first, let s look a little more at the file just saved from InfoPath Filler. If you use Windows explorer to view the files in the mapped drive, as shown in Figure 10-7, you will see that you do indeed have two files stored there. The .xsn file is the form definition file that you published to this location. The second file with the .xml extension is the data file you just saved. As mentioned at the beginning of this discussion on slide libraries, you may want to use slide libraries to store commonly reused slides so that anyone in your organization creating a new PowerPoint presentation can import the existing slide rather than create the slide from scratch. To do this, refer back to the library menu bar and the option Copy Slide to Presentation, as shown in Figure 12-66.

The reason for this difference is that when InfoPath Filler saves the data from the form, it saves only the data, not the form itself. However, it does retain a reference to the path and file name of the form used to create the data in the beginning of the file. If we were to open the .xml file with Notepad (or your favorite XML editor), you would see the data stored by InfoPath Filler. Figure 10-8 shows the opened .xml file.
