The idea behind the Smoke and Mirrors technique is simple. Take a picture of smoke, and animate it in an infinite, treadmill-like loop. For each fire, mask off a nice smoke plume. Put a translucent fire-colored overlay over the bottom, and the smoke animating in the background gives a nice simulation of a particle emitter without any of the math. When I was a kid, we used butcher paper and paper towel tubes.
