Now let s add validation to our preferences portlet. The PreferencesValidatorPortlet class demonstrates the use of preferences with a preferences validator. Our validation logic is very simple: the validator forces the stored values to have a length of at least four characters. Using regular expressions or a list of allowable values from a database would be easy to add, because all you would need to do is write a method for each preference name that validates the preference individually. Your method could then collect all of the keys that failed validation, and return them in the ValidationException as the failedKeys collection. Let s also add a try...catch block around our call to the store() method on the PortletPreferences object in the portlet s processAction() method. If we catch a validation error, we add the validation error message and the failed keys to the session. If the store() method is successful, we remove the validation error and failed keys from the session. This way, our render() method will continue to show the validation errors until they are fixed. In our render() method, we display the validator error message if we have one, and we also display a list of failed keys. We remind the user that none of the preferences was stored, as you can see when the code displays the previous preferences.
