CodeCharge Studio is a step up from CodeCharge. Studio combines CodeCharge s site-building and -generation capabilities with a powerful code-editing environment and Application Builder. The new code editor is very nice. It has a good default color scheme, and it uses a nice approach to tag editing. The integrated Help system is also one of the better ones that we ve seen. The focus of CodeCharge Studio is much the same as that of CodeCharge itself. The idea is that you can create a site easily and get it up and running quickly. In practice, however, this task is much more difficult in CodeCharge Studio than it is in CodeCharge. The interfaces are not as intuitive, and, in fact, the integrated Help system isn t available in those interfaces where it s most needed. CodeCharge Studio also seems to have its fair share of bugs. The generated code is still difficult to understand (perhaps even more so than it was in CodeCharge). Also, the tutorial provided with CodeCharge Studio is nothing like the wonderful tutorial provided with CodeCharge. The Studio tutorial broke our installation and we ended up needing to reinstall. What s nice, however, is that Studio provides you with an Application Builder to help you get your site up and running. In practice, however, this Application Builder is severely limited and can be more a hindrance than a help. All told, the current version of CodeCharge Studio (version 1.07) is not as good as CodeCharge.
