As the networks are opening up, so are the terminals, but in a slightly different manner. In particular, XML-based web services enable application developers to use many existing services over the Internet to quickly create new applications. Since mobile terminals are constrained with respect to memory and processor power, new versions of XML processing had to be developed. The most promising approach in this area is kXML, kSOAP, and kUDDI. These approaches to XML processing are speci cally designed for mobile terminals. As XML web services evolve in the enterprise computing arena with work ow management techniques, so will their mobile terminal counterparts, thus increasing the classes of applications that can quickly be enabled on XG mobile networks. With 3G networks we are already seeing new applications such as video conferencing. With next-generation networks, the trend toward the use and acceptance of multimedia applications will accelerate with applications such as mobile TV (television channels from the mobile phone) becoming a reality. The focus of a lot of the work in media technologies is codec development for speech, audio, and video. The future of this work will progress in a variety of directions including the uni cation of codecs for speech and audio. In video, new coding techniques, besides Huffman coding, will need to be developed to make progress beyond the current state of the art. For applications such as mobile TV to become reality, we will need to stream data in real time over the air to mobile terminals.

The first direct cost to consider in the analysis phase of the BPO Life Cycle is associated with the internal staff that will be enlisted to conduct the analysis As discussed in detail in 3, organizations should use a team approach to identify and select BPO opportunities Organizing a BAT means that employees from diverse units will take time away from their normal duties to serve on the team The time these individuals spend away from their normal duties is a direct cost Costs associated with removing individuals from their normal job functions can be calculated in several ways One standard method is to count the hours spent on the BPO analysis for each BAT member (and anyone else they bring in on a transitory basis) and multiply this figure by the hourly wage for that individual The result of this calculation is then attributed to the BPO project.

OUTSOURCING Whinston (2003) reviewed the empirical literature of the previous two decades supporting EO, and although the theories of TCE and PRT are based on the same principles of bounded rationality, opportunism, and speci c assets, he found no support for PRT s detailed predictions in the EO literature. This result was based partly on the lack of suf cient data to test the predictions of PRT, and secondly on some fundamental differences between PRT and TCE. Where TCE focuses on the quasi-rents associated with asset speci city, PRT deals more speci cally on the marginal returns to noncontractible assets (residual rights of control especially to individuals, and the returns thereon). A second observation is that although the predicted results are often in the same direction, toward or away from integration, PRT s prediction is dependent on the changes in marginal returns under different ownership structures, whereas TCE focuses more narrowly on the appropriation of quasi-rents from economic activity. Overall, PRT is an important framework in the analysis of economic organization, and an interesting one to consider. Although PRT is appealing from a technical standpoint, given the formality and rigor applied to the modeling of individual behavior, the detail and sophistication of its predictions and models make it extremely dif cult to apply in practice or test empirically. Agency issues will from here be considered under the construct of opportunism, rather than a formal adaptation of property rights theory.
