Font users often wonder why some typefaces look larger than others at the same point size on their computers. Two variables are responsible for that effect: The real cap height: Although two fonts are set with the same point size, their cap heights might be different. The reason for that difference is that type designers have some degree of freedom to decide how large they define an uppercase letter within a fixed letter design area, which is called the bounding box. The x-height: Although some fonts have the same cap height (like in the following illustration) one might appear larger (and thus better readable) than another. The simple reason for that is the bigger x-height that results in larger lowercase letters. The illustration includes two extreme examples for the optical size of a typeface.
