With these values combined, you can set the permissions you need. Imagine that you want to give read, write, and execute to the user, read and write to the group, and nothing to others. No special permissions are applied. Thus, the first digit you use is a 0, because you re not using any special permissions. The second digit should be the result of the sum 4+2+1.
